As President Trump endorses a fringe conspiracy theory suggesting that the novel coronavirus originated in a Chinese lab, zoologist and disease ecologist Peter Daszak says the leap that the coronavirus made from bat to human is "not unusual." The coronavirus that led to SARS emerged from bats. So, too, did Ebola and rabies. He says the most likely reason for bat-to-humans transmission is the closeness that we have to wildlife in many communities around the world. "This is not uncommon. We have seen this with many other disease outbreaks."
