Grout: An Important Detail Not to Overlook

Grout: An Important Detail Not to Overlook I bet you never thought you'd be reading about grout and actually be interested in it! Grout is one of those things where, if you think about it now, you can forget about it later. From a design standpoint, it might be an accent color or a color that tried to blend with the tile as much as possible. It just depends on the application.

There are a couple of different grout types. The perfect grout type for your project depends a lot on the kind of tile and the size grout joint that you use.

The most common type is a cement based grout. It's been around forever, and it falls into two basic categories: sanded and unsanded. Sanded grouts are for joints that are a little wider. The sand bulks up the grout to keep it from shrinking in the joint. Joints that are an eighth of an inch or smaller you want to use an unsanded grout, so it fills the joint smoothly. Some cement based grouts are formulated, so they don't require sealers, but not all of them so be sure to ask about that critical detail.

Polyurethane grouts are a bit new to the market. They are typically premixed and are incredibly durable and stain resistant. They will be a little more expensive than cement grouts, but they never require sealers. It also needs a lot more labor to install and clean up polyurethane grouts, so you may pay a little more for that.
