Conserving the traditional Aruban miniature boat (ICH)

Conserving the traditional Aruban miniature boat (ICH) The first miniature boat was built in the 19th century in the Rancho neighbourhood. The fishermen started building these boats especially for their children, as a way to teach them craftsmanship of building boats and the art of sailing. Soon after, the children started building miniature copies of existing sailboats, and they started organizing sailboat races. These competitions became a tradition and since then took place annually on special holidays such as Queensday. It was a big celebration, where the whole family came together. Unfortunately, this tradition and craftsmanship has been disappearing the last couple of years. Stichting Rancho aims to protect and promote the miniature sailboat as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Aruba. In 2020 with the help of UNESCO Aruba Foundation Rancho produced a short documentary that will give more insight of the craftmanship of this beautiful Aruban tradition.

This is a short version of the full documentary that we will premiere on the 20th of April 2020. We invite you to visit our Facebook Page and get informed.
