Separating a Mixture of Salt and Sand

Separating a Mixture of Salt and Sand The task was to separate a fairly uniform mixture of salt and sand. To do this, I added water to the mixture, which dissolved the salt. Then I filtered a small sample of the still-settling mixture in a funnel, which trapped the sand, but let the salt solution through to the evaporating dish. From there, I put the dish on a tripod stand with a wire mesh (to distribute heat). When I lit the alcohol burner, the water from the solution evaporated and salt crystals remained in the dish.
