You can start to build your future by setting the right goals. But many people are unsure about how to stick to goals and see them through. In this video, I describe some of the most common goal setting mistakes and explain how you can avoid them.
First of all, I recommend that you imagine your goal as a golden glow in the future. What kind of feeling does that give you? We often choose goals for the wrong reason. If you’re not feeling good about your goal, it may be time to reassess.
One mistake people make is not feeling worthy, or simply doubting themselves. That's one important reason why many of us don’t learn how to stick to goals; it's too intimidating. But as you build your future, you’ll slowly become the person you need to be.
You also want to make sure the goal you choose is concrete. This is another mistake people make. If you want a more successful career, what does that look like, feel like, sound like? Just because you’re visualizing a glow in the future, doesn’t mean it should be a nebulous target.
And then you absolutely have to make it mean something to you. Without meaning, we lose motivation. What's meaningful about it? Expand on what that meaning really is.
The final mistake is not getting clear about your results. Raising the stakes is a good way to learn how to stick to goals because it allows you to keep looking ahead without getting discouraged.
You can build your future however you want. Set goals that make you light up, and keep heading toward them, one intelligent step at a time.
